Why Co.Design4All?
The Co.Design4All Framework has evolved from years of experience supporting projects and organisations across many sectors. Everywhere project leaders are attempting to bring people together to get better results. Often, they have little formal training in how to manage the process.

This echoes our beginnings some decades ago. Yes, we had a University education which exposed us to how organisations and systems work. We thought we even understood people, politics and a little about power. However, after years facilitating the design of new products and services, major regional and industry initiatives and overseeing program and policy change we now know how much we had to learn. We want to save you time by giving back what we have learnt.
Co.Design4All brings together the archives, insights and philosophy of its founders, Natasha Doherty, Managing Director of Ethicol, an ethically based consultancy and Tracey Johnson, CEO of Inala Primary Care. After years of collaborating on large projects, we decided to pool resources to create a Framework which could be followed by anyone facing a large change project, no matter where they are.
If your work involves convincing others to contribute, listen, change or collaborate, co-design is a process you can use to ensure better engagement and even better results. Rather than spend decades accumulating experience and method, Co.Design4All brings to your fingertips the best in current practice around problems solving, strategy, consultation, group facilitation, project management and change. Using a robust method, we will ensure that you never enter a room unprepared. Applying tools in advance of key meetings and milestones ensures you are talking to the right people about the right things at the right time.
So whether your task is to manage a public consultation, complete a program evaluation, design a new service or simply ensure the work of your organisation is more seamless and impactful, co-design is an approach you can use. It fosters deep working relationships built on trust. It ensures people share valuable information. It enables people to commit to joint decisions. It creates environments where different perspectives are harnessed to deliver novel solutions to big problems.
Rather than just create a Framework for study, we have plunged into the detail. Co.Design4All is underpinned by a toolkit of well over 100 templates and techniques. Each resource and its application is simply explained. Downloadable documents mean you can then apply of content to your setting. You will be an experienced facilitator in no time at all.
Co-design is all about co-creation. Through our partnership we have distilled years of learning into practical tools. These have been edited and reviewed by a team of experts we assembled because we trusted their insights would improve the Framework and tools. Through making them available through this online platform, we extend the opportunity to keep co-creating to you and your teams today.
co.design4all helps
benefits business and
community
From the moment we realised that smiling would make our parents coo and spend time with us, everyone has been using various means to get attention. In business, that attention is focussed on getting customers to learn about, adopt and promote your products. They are more likely to do that if your product solution really addresses their need. They will deliver net promotor scores which will drive sales if their entire experience is supported by seamless service. Getting everyone in an organisation to understand and deliver for the customer every time involves collaboration and creativity. Co-design can improve the cooperation between parts of a business and even involve customers in solving their own problems with your team.
Within our communities, we often see and hear of problems which are not met by any business. Councils, large employers and government agencies are often seen as responsible for solving these issues. However, understanding what is driving angst, waste and complexity is hard unless all of those involved in a situation collaborate. With so many different perspectives, skills and resources in play, managing that engagement process is challenging.
It is even more fraught if big change is threatened and driven by an organisation outside of the community. This is the case when new infrastructure, mining projects and urban developments are proposed. Co-design is a method for creating harmony from dissent by focussing attention on shared insights and commitments. Then everyone can agree on the path forward and their role in delivering that new future.
Co.Design4All provides a framework for navigating the many engagements you will need to have to define a common reality and agree on a plan for change. Better than any theory, it offers practical tools and techniques to underpin each phase and stage of the process. In the true spirit of co-design, you get to choose from amongst a variety of tools so that your solution is truly fit for purpose. So no matter how big or small your problem, co-design and the Co.Design4All Framework is fit for purpose.

Co.Design4All Founders
Natasha Doherty and Tracey Johnson’s long-standing partnership across many successful collaborations, now brings the Co.Design4All framework to the market. This is the culmination of over a decade of collaborating on major projects, evaluations, workshops, webinars to support numerous co-design initiatives across different communities, businesses and industries.
Natasha has over 20 years experience in providing strategic and operational advice to Government, for purpose organisations and private clients in the health and social services sector.
She has leveraged this experience to develop Co.Design4All. The toolkit reflects the experience and knowledge built across many projects and in many different settings.
She has seen the impact that genuine involvement of community can have to improve ownership of an initiative or program and the outcomes that result in a community and for individuals.
Natasha wants all organisations to realise the power of solid co.design and the extraordinary impact it can have.
Natasha has worked in health, homelessness, child protection, youth justice, domestic and family violence, community development and many other areas. Delivering evaluation, economic analysis, business cases, developed and tested funding models and social impact.
Natasha is also the CEO of Ethicol, and consulting business delivery values based consulting support to clients.
Tracey has been CEO of Inala Primary Care, a charitable, award-winning general practice in Queensland’s most disadvantaged suburban location for more than 10 years.
She has facilitated projects with local stakeholders to generate new models of care, developed the business cases for change, pitched for funding, created shared governance models and evaluated outcomes whilst managing the conflict which can arise between parties.
Tracey has a background in product development in the medical technology sector and industry development. Pair those experiences with stints working in regional economic development early in her career and she brings to a room many experiences of working with groups to solve complex problems and design new services or solutions.
Enabling everyone to be their best every day is Tracey’s motto. This has led to devotion to developing practical training programs, useful workplace tools and facilitation which cuts through organisational politics.
She is a change agent, mentor, problem solver and energiser with credibility to convince even reluctant participants to engage in collaborative working and co-design.

McGrath Foundation Case Study
McGrath Foundation is an Australian charity focussed on supporting patients and their families recover from cancer. It has pink as its colour representing its roots in breast cancer research. Through work with Natasha Doherty and her team over more than six years, McGrath has reached out to patients, carers and providers to find the holes in the current system of care. Often there have been pink faces in the room as various unmet needs have been identified…embarrassing in a system which tries so hard to care. However, through listening to the experience of those on the ground and affected from places as remote as Alice Springs to bustling Sydney, McGrath has called on truth to chart a new future. The result is…

FAQ’s
The Co.Design4All Framework has been developed by Tracey Johnson and Natasha Doherty, founders of Co.Design4All. Their mission is to see co-design methods used more widely to solve problems everywhere. For that reason, anyone can use the Framework acknowledging the source as Co.Design4All.
The purpose of creating an online toolkit is to ensure that people everywhere can benefit from our Framework. Co.Design4All is really a community of practice. We hope to enable the sharing of experience, access to expertise and co-creation of common language, approaches and tools. We want to make co-design possible in any situation involving a problem and need for change.
The Co.Design4All Framework was developed after reviewing the literature and aligning that to our experience as practitioners. The Co.Design4All Framework was then reviewed in a two day workshop by a gathering of experienced facilitators in 2023. From there we have shown the Framework to many other respected colleagues. Collectively they have written articles on co-design or engaged in place based co-design projects or clinical co-design efforts. All have encouraged us to publish and make our Framework available. Their enthusiasm for sharing the logic of our Framework is what spurred us to surmount the challenge of taking hundreds of documents and making them accessible to all.
We are very keen to meet with other practitioners who see the potential of co-design. We know co-design is a movement so connecting to others driving change is important. Reach out to us to see how our visions align. We are naturally collaborative and curious so every conversation is sure to lead somewhere.
