PHASE 2 Design

The Design Phase takes the data gathering and early engagement you have done during Discovery and makes sure you have the right people in the room ready to collaborate. The core deliverables of this Phase are to lay down the expectations for how the group will co-create and enable other leaders to step into their roles.

3 Stages of Design

So within the Design Phase, there are three Stages; each underpinned by a total of 34 tools. Some of those tools will be re-used throughout this and other Phases. It is your choice as to when they are introduced and how often they are re-used.

Stage 6
RECRUITMENT

This stage will involve the recruitment of participants for the co-design process. This includes invitations and briefings required to ensure stakeholders are informed and prepared for the process. It also involves being strategic about involving others who could ultimately take on governance, sponsorship and funding responsibilities.

Stage 7
C0-DESIGN SENSITIZING

This is the first step in the co-design series of workshops or gatherings. It involves sensitizing stakeholders to the issue through use of the information that was gathered in the Discovery Phase. This will involve reporting key findings, ideas raised and potential solutions. Getting everyone to understand whatever the burning platform is, is critical. Everyone needs to sign up to solve the problem at hand.

Stage 8
CO-DESIGN FACILITATION

This is the second step of the co-design workshop or series of gatherings. The focus is on facilitation of a process so that the participants develop and test ideas and solutions.

Gate 2 – REFLECT & PLAN

The reflect and plan component of the framework has been designed to provide a point to review what has been achieved to date. Based on this review process insights will arise. They then feed into the plan for the next stage of implementing the Framework.

Through answering questions at the Reflect and Plan gate, you and your team can determine if the project is ready to move on. Remember, no project is linear. That only occurs in Gantt Charts! It might be that new players you have introduced into the Design Phase have introduced new data which needs to be accessed and explored.

This will take time but add to the completeness of what is taken into the Analysis Stage which comes next. So remember, to pause, reflect and where necessary recircle through elements you need to achieve before moving on.

CO-DESIGN IN ACTION

Five To Thrive Case Study

Everyone would agree that giving kids the best start in life is critical. Most of us know that before a child turns seven, many aspects of who they will become have been established.

When a group of local health, education and social care providers decided to gather in Inala, one of Queensland’s most disadvantaged regions, the enthusiasm was high. The common language around how to make a difference was not.

Bringing the group together to ultimately produce the Five to Thrive approach took many meetings. Common understanding and a shared frame of reference needed to be developed about how to prepare kids for a good start at school. Inala Primary Care was the only general practice involved.

Clarifying the role of general practice, the constraints on our team and the practicalities of asking general practitioners to do more took some effort. We worked with the meeting organisers to get the right people involved, to have videos of stimulating ideas shown and to manage the sometimes outspoken behaviour of attendees.

It all comes down to having lots of tools in your back pocket so that you can harness the energy of others to get a good result. The Co.Design4All framework has a multitude of tools that enabled us to produce the Five to Thrive approach.
